Tiago Abiola Delfim Almeida Ilori (born 26 February 1993) is an English-born Portuguese footballer who played as a defender for Liverpool from 2013 to 2017, but made just three first team appearances.
Liverpool career[]
It was reported early in the 2013 summer transfer window that Liverpool were keen on recruiting Sporting Lisbon’s highly-rated young centre back Tiago Ilori. The links initially dried up with Liverpool and Sporting seemingly too far apart in their valuations of the player, however Liverpool re-opened talks towards the end of August and eventually agreed a fee in the region of £7,000,000 for the player. Liverpool confirmed the deal for Ilori on 2 September 2013, together with the deal for fellow centre back Mamadou Sakho. Ilori took squad number 26, last worn by midfielder Charlie Adam.
Ilori made his first appearance in a Liverpool shirt on 17 September 2013, as he played the duration of the U21s' clash with Sunderland at Anfield. In a 5-2 victory, Ilori gave a composed and commanding performance for which he received praise. Despite this, Ilori did not play a single minute of first team football, and on 20 January 2014, he was sent out on loan to Spanish side Granada for the remainder of the 2013-14 season. Upon his return in the summer of 2014, he was expected to move out on loan again for the 2014-15 season. On 18 August 2014, Liverpool announced he had joined French side Bordeaux.
On 1 September 2015, after a reported move to Sunderland had broke down, it was confirmed that Ilori was to be sent out on loan to Aston Villa for the 2015-16 season. The Villans also have the option to buy the centre back for a fee between £6,000,000 and £9,000,000 at the end of the season.
Ilori did not play a game while at Villa, so new manager Remi Garde made an agreement on 8 January 2016 to cancel the loan. On that day Ilori made his first Liverpool appearance, starting as first choice centre back in a youthful team in a 2-2 FA Cup draw at Exeter. The defender made his first Anfield appearance on 20 January, continuing at centre back in a 3-0 replay win over Exeter. On 9 February 2016, Ilori started alongside Lucas in a 2-1 defeat at West Ham, but put in a good performance alongside the makeshift centre-half.
After failing to make an appearance in a senior squad for the 2016-17 season, it was confirmed in 18 January 2017 that Ilori had signed for Championship side Reading for a fee of £3,750,000.
