Stéphane Henchoz (born 7 September 1974) is a former Swiss international footballer who played as a centre back for Liverpool from 1999-2005.
Liverpool career[]
Henchoz signed for Liverpool from Blackburn Rovers on 2 June 1999, when Liverpool met the £3,500,000 relegation related release clause in his contract. Due to a groin operation, his Liverpool career didn't get started until 21 September 1999 when he started a League Cup Second Round Second Leg match against Hull City, which Liverpool won 4-2. He made his league debut against Aston Villa on 02 October 1999 in a goalless draw.
Henchoz became a virtual ever present in his debut season at Anfield, making 33 appearances in all competitions, establishing a centre back partnership alongside Sami Hyypia. Henchoz had a big role in Liverpool's treble winning 2000-01 season, though his contributions were somewhat unconventional. In the 2001 League Cup Final, with Liverpool winning 1-0 going into the final minutes of the match, Henchoz gave away a penalty due to a handball, which Birmingham converted to take the match to added time. Liverpool eventually won the match 5-4 on penalties. Henchoz also influenced the 2001 FA Cup Final via a handball, this time to Liverpool's benefit, by denying a certain goal from Thierry Henry in the 17th minute. Liverpool went on to win the match 2-1, and Henchoz earned the nickname "Handchoz". He looked back on this season saying "I'd do anything to stop the ball crossing the line".
