Sepp van den Berg (born 20 December 2001) is a Dutch footballer who played as a defender for Liverpool.

Liverpool career[]

Van den Berg came through to the PEC Zwolle first-team as an extremely promising talent, making his debut at just sixteen. After a breakthrough 2018-19 campaign, making fifteen appearances, the youngster became the target of many large European sides, including Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

On 27 June 2019, it was confirmed that Liverpool had reached an agreement to sign van den Berg on a long-term deal, for an initial fee of just £1,300,000. The Dutchman joined his fellow national compatriots; Virgil van Dijk and Ki-Jana Hoever at the club.

Van den Berg was included in the club's pre-season squad, and featured in multiple friendlies.

On 25 September 2019, van den Berg made his first Liverpool appearance, coming on as a late substitute in a 2-0 win away to MK Dons. A month later, he made his first start for the club, playing 90 minutes in a 5-5 draw with Arsenal, which was eventually won on a penalty shootout.

The youngster made two more appearances throughout the campaign, and was included on the bench for the final of the FIFA Club World Cup, picking up his first winners’ medal.

With the emergence of Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams, van den Berg failed to make a single appearance in the 2020-21 season, despite the Reds suffering a massive injury crisis at the back. After the signings of Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak in the winter window, the Dutchman was sent out on loan to Preston for the remainder of the campaign.

After a successful spell, Preston agreed to extend the loan to cover the 2021-22 season, with the youngster even featuring against his parent club in an EFL Cup 4th Round tie, with Liverpool prevailing 2-0.

The 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons were spent in Germany, with spells at Schalke and Mainz respectively. After a successful season at Mainz, van den Berg returned to Liverpool for pre-season, with new manager Arne Slot in charge. Reports began to emerge of his growing unhappiness at the lack of opportunities, and rumours began of a move away from the club.

Despite this, the Dutchman featured heavily throughout pre-season, and put in some assured performances. On 22 August 2024 however, it was officially confirmed that Brentford had signed van den Berg, for a reported fee of £25,000,000.

Van den Berg left the club having made just four appearances, all in the 2019-20 season.
