Ryan McLaughlin (born 30 September 1994) is a Northern Irish footballer who plays for the Liverpool Under 21s as a right back.
Liverpool career
Liverpool signed McLaughlin in the summer of 2011 on a three-year deal, with the youngster attracting a great deal of praise from Academy Director Frank McParland. He racked up 14 appearances for the under-18s in the 2011-12 Academy Under 18s season, and also made an impressive 12 appearances for the Reserves in his debut season with the side- although eight of these came in the NextGen Series. He netted his first goal for Liverpool in the Reserves' 4-1 League victory over Aston Villa on 2 April 2012.
Considered one of the brightest prospects in the Liverpool youth system, McLaughlin is highly regarded for his aggressive tackling and is effective going forward. He has previously stated that he models his game on Barcelona right back Dani Alves.
In July 2012, new Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers took McLaughlin on the first team's pre season tour of the USA. He made his senior bow on 25 July against Roma, playing the first 45 minutes and greatly impressing with his slick passing and movement and effective defensive work. He was given the first team squad number 43 for the 2012-13 season. Although he failed to make his senior debut in the season, he continued to shine for the U21s, and made 21 appearances for the side during their season. He was rewarded for his fine form with a new three year contract on 19 July 2013.
On 29 January 2014, McLaughlin moved to Championship side Barnsley for the remainder of the season. His campaign with the U21s finished with one goal in eight games.
