Ragnar Klavan (born 30 October 1985) is an Estonian international footballer who played as a centre-back for Liverpool from 2016 to 2018.

Liverpool careerEdit

The 2015-16 season was another poor season defensively, with 50 league goals being conceded for the third season in a row. This, partnered with the departures of Kolo Toure and Martin Skrtel, as well as injuries to Joe Gomez and Mamadou Sakho forced Jurgen Klopp to invest in his defence.

Joel Matip was brought in on a free transfer but Liverpool still lacked an experienced head at the back. Klavan had faced Liverpool twice in Europe for Augsburg in February, which showed Klopp his qualities, and on 17 July 2016 reports came out that a deal was underway to bring the Estonian to Anfield.

On 20 July 2016, it was confirmed that Klavan had signed for a reported fee of around £4,200,000. The centre-back took the number 17 shirt, which had been recently vacated by Mamadou Sakho.

The Estonian made his first team debut in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Chelsea, but was widely praised for his performance. On 14 August 2016 Klavan made his competitive debut, starting in a 4-3 win at Arsenal. He was widely appraised for his solid performance. The next game however, Klavan recklessly committed to a challenge and was beaten, allowing Burnley to attack and score their second goal in a 2-0 defeat for Liverpool.

On 20 September 2016, Klavan started and scored his first Liverpool goal, a close range finish after a deflected corner to open the scoring in a 3-0 win at Derby. Due to injuries to Joel Matip, Klavan became a regular feature in the starting XI during December, and put in commanding displays in 1-0 wins over Everton and Manchester City.

With injury problems for Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren throughout the season, Klavan often filled in, and became a reliable third-choice defender for the club.

On 1 January 2018, Klavan scored a 94th minute winner away to Burnley, diving in at the back post to meet Dejan Lovren’s header. This made him the first Estonian to score a Premier League goal.

After the arrival of Virgil van Dijk, Klavan found first-team opportunities hard to come by, making just three more starts for the rest of the season.

On 16 August 2018, reports began to claim that Klavan was set to leave Liverpool in search of more first-team action, with Cagliari apparently interested in signing the Estonian. A day later, it was confirmed that the Italian side had signed Klavan for a fee of around £2,000,000.

Klavan made 53 appearances in his two seasons at the club, scoring twice.
