Liverpool career[]

Having been a lifelong Liverpool supporter, Thompson was handed a professional contract at the age of 17, on 22 January 1971. He made his debut in the 1971-72 season against Man Utd on 3 April 1972 as a 81st minute substitute, replacing John Toshack. His first start came the following season against Norwich in a 1-1 stalemate on 28 October 1972.

Perhaps the proudest moment in Thompson's career was in the 1981 European Cup final, when he lifted the giant trophy as the red's captain.
