Neil Andrew Mellor (born 4 November 1982) is a retired English footballer who played as a striker for Liverpool from 2002 to 2006.

Liverpool career[]

On 4 December 2002, Mellor made his debut for Liverpool, starting in a 1-1 League Cup draw with Leicester, playing 76 minutes before being taken off for Milan Baros. Mellor scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 League Cup semi final loss to Sheffield United. Mellor made six appearances in his debut season, scoring a goal and picking up a League Cup winners medal. Mellor was loaned out to West Ham for the 2003-04 season.

On 10 November 2004, Mellor scored twice to give Liverpool a 2-0 win over Middlesborough in the League Cup. It was on 28 November 2004 when Mellor really made his mark on the club. Liverpool and Arsenal were drawing 1-1 but in the dying seconds of the game, Mellor unleashed a curling strike from 30 yards to win the game for Liverpool. 10 days later, things got better for Mellor, he came on as a second half substitution against Olympiakos, with the Reds needing to win by a 2 goal margin but the score was 1-1. Within two minutes of his introduction, the striker scored a typical poachers finish. In the 86th minute, with Liverpool needing just a goal to qualify for the Knock-out stages, Mellor perfectly cushioned a header into the path of Steven Gerrard who scored a screamer from long range. On 19 December 2004, Mellor scored what proved to be his last for Liverpool in a 3-1 win over Newcastle. Injuries kept him out for the rest of the season.

In January 2006, Mellor was sent out on loan to Wigan until the summer, when he signed for Preston North End on a permanent deal.
