Nathaniel Phillips (born 21 March 1997) is an English footballer who plays as a defender for Liverpool.

Liverpool career[]

Phillips signed for Liverpool in the summer of 2016, just after his release from the Bolton Academy, and just days before he was set to make a move to America.

Phillips quickly became a member of the U23s squad, but failed to make his debut until January due to competition from Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori.

From January onwards, Phillips became a regular feature in the U23s lineup, making 14 appearances in his debut campaign, scoring once.

A back injury caused the youngster to miss a lot of action in the 2017-18 season, but he returned at the tail-end of the campaign and became a regular starter in the U23s.

On 7 July 2018, Phillips made his senior debut, playing 45 minutes in a 7-0 friendly win over Chester. Phillips continued to be a prominent player throughout pre-season, due to injuries to Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip, with Joe Gomez also struggling for fitness.

Ahead of the 2019-20 season, it was confirmed that Phillips had been sent out on loan to VFB Stuttgart for the campaign. He made 11 appearances for the German side in the first half of the campaign, before an injury crisis at Anfield led to him being recalled.

On 5 January 2020, Phillips made his Liverpool debut, playing the full 90 minutes in an exceptional 1-0 victory over Everton in the FA Cup.

The 2nd half of the 2020 - 2021 season saw him answer the call again when Liverpool was battling an injury crisis which saw them stripped bare of their primary defenders. During this period, he was at the heart of the Liverpool defense, often partnering with Rhys Williams and midfielders as he saw the season out. In 19th May 2021, he opened his account with a headed goal against Burnley in a 3-0 away win.
