Nabil El Zhar (born 27 August 1986) is a Moroccan winger who played for Liverpool between 2006-2011.
Liverpool career[]
El Zhar signed from French side St Etienne in October 2006, and was initially deployed in Liverpool's reserve side. His debut came in a league match against Portsmouth on 29 November 2006, where he replaced Luis Garcia as a 71st minute substitute. He made two further substitute appearances against Portsmouth and Fulham to finish his debut season with three appearances.
His first start for Liverpool came in the following season, when he lined up against Cardiff in a fourth round League Cup tie on 31 October 2007; which Liverpool won 2-1. Again, El Zhar was used infrequently, and made three appearances throughout the season. The 2008-09 season provided much more action for the French born youngster, and he managed to make 19 appearances, though he only started three of them. Following the end of the season, El Zhar signed a two year contract extension on 11 July 2009, which would last until 2012.
It would seem that El Zhar was beginning to establish himself as a firm squad player, but in the 2009-10 season he started just one game, and was limited to seven appearances in total. In order to achieve more first team football, he sealed a move to Greek club PAOK on 31 August 2010 until the end of the season.
El Zhar returned to Anfield in the summer of 2011, however on 18 August 2011 Liverpool announced they had reached an agreement with El Zhar to release him from his contract ahead of a proposed move to Spanish side Levante.
