Liverpool career

Skrtel signed for Liverpool on 11 January 2008 from Zenit St. Petersburg for a fee of about £6,000,000. Upon signing the Slovakian international, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez described him as "aggressive, quick and good in the air". He made his debut on 21 January 2008 against Aston Villa, coming on as a 70th minute replacement for Alvaro Arbeloa. His first start came five days later, when he played in the FA Cup match against Havant & Waterlooville. He scored an own goal in the game, but Liverpool prevailed as 5-2 winners.

He had to wait until his third season at the club for his first goal. He scored it on 21 November 2009 in a 2-2 draw with Manchester City.
