Marko Grujić (born 13 April 1996) is a Serbian international footballer who played as a midfielder for Liverpool.

Liverpool career[]

After the arrival of Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, there were plenty of rumours concerning Marko Grujic, with many speculating that the young Serbian star was set to arrive at the club in January.

On 6 January 2016, it was confirmed that Grujic was Klopp's first signing as manager, for a reported fee of around £5,100,000 from Red Star Belgrade, where he is to spend the rest of the 2015-16 season on loan.

Grujic reported for training at Melwood in the summer and was granted a work permit on 4 July 2016. That same day it was confirmed that Grujic was to wear the number 16 shirt for the 2016-17 season.

The Serbian made his uncompetitive bow for the club on 13 July 2016, in a 5-0 friendly win at Fleetwood. Grujic opened the scoring 18 minutes in, with a powerful strike from inside the box, and had also previously won a penalty, which was missed by Danny Ings. Grujic picked up a total of three goals in pre-season, the most notable being a sublime curling header to round off a 4-0 win over Barcelona.

On 20 August 2016, Grujic made his competitive debut, coming on as a late substitute in a 2-0 defeat at Burnley. The Serbian had to wait until 20 September to make his first start, when he played the full 90 minutes in a 3-0 win at Derby.

Grujic played a bit-part role in his first season in England, making most of his starts in the Cups with a few substitute appearances in the Premier League.

On 18 January 2018, it was confirmed that Grujic had joined Cardiff City on loan for the rest of the 2017-18 season, with a clause forcing the Championship side to play him in at least 14 of their remaining 19 games. After a mildly successful spell at Cardiff, Grujic returned to Liverpool for pre-season, and was poised to spend another season out on loan.

On 19 August 2018, it was confirmed that Grujic had signed a new long-term deal with the club, and would spend the 2018-19 season on loan at Hertha Berlin. After a successful season, Grujic again joined the German side for the 2019-20 campaign.

After another successful season in Berlin, Grujic returned to Anfield ahead of the 2020-21 season. Rumours linked the Serbian international with a move away, with him being far down in the pecking order for the Liverpool midfield.

Despite this, on 24 September 2020, Grujic made his first Liverpool appearance in almost three years, starting in a 7-2 victory away to Lincoln in the League Cup. The midfielder grabbed his first goal for the club, firing in from the edge of the area to earn Liverpool's sixth of the night. The Serbian made one further appearance that season, playing the full 90 minutes in a penalty shootout loss to Arsenal in the same competition, before heading out on loan to Porto for the rest of the campaign.

This proved to be Grujic’s final appearance in a Red shirt, as after the conclusion of his loan spell, the Portuguese side agreed a deal to sign the midfielder for a reported fee of around £10,500,000.

On 20 July 2021, Grujic departed Liverpool after five years at the club, making 16 appearances and scoring once.
