John Joseph Welsh (born 10 January 1984) is an English footballer who played as a midfielder for Liverpool from 2002 to 2006.
Liverpool career[]
Welsh joined the Liverpool Academy at the age of 10 and rose through the youth ranks, captaining The Reserves.
On 4 December 2002, Welsh made his Liverpool debut, coming on as a substitute in a League Cup tie with Ipswich Town. That was Welsh's only appearance in the 2002-03 season, but he did pick up a League Cup winners medal as the Reds beat Manchester United in the Final. Welsh had to wait just under a year for his next appearance, coming on as a substitute in a UEFA Cup tie against Olimpia Ljubljana. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. On 4 October 2003, Welsh made his Premier League debut, once again coming off the bench in a 2-1 home defeat to Arsenal.
On 10 November 2004, Welsh made his first appearance in the 2004-05 season, coming off the bench in a 2-0 win over Middlesborough. On 18 January 2005, Welsh made his first start for Liverpool. It wasn't a day to remember however, as the Reds crashed out of the FA Cup with a shock 1-0 defeat to Burnley. Welsh made his first and only Champions League appearance on 9 March 2005, coming of the bench in a 3-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen. Just over a month later Welsh made his final appearance for Liverpool, starting in a 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.
In the summer of 2005, Welsh was loaned out to Hull. In January 2006, the move was made permanent in part of a swap deal for Paul Anderson.
