Javier Manquillo Gaitán (born 5 May 1994) is a Spanish footballer who plays as a right back for Liverpool, on loan from Atletico Madrid

Liverpool career

In the summer of 2014, Brendan Rodgers looked to improve his team's defence, with Liverpool conceding 50 League goals in the 2013-14 season. Following the signing of central defender Dejan Lovren, Rodgers looked to improve the fullback position.

On 6 August 2014, Liverpool confirmed that they had signed Spaniard Manquillo on loan from Atletico Madrid for the 2014-15 season. The deal was widely reported to be a loan of two years with an option to make the deal permanent for £5,000,000. Liverpool's official statement however did not discuss a second year or an option to buy.

After signing, Manquillo told the official website "I'm very happy to have signed for a club like Liverpool. I think it's one of the biggest in Europe. Any footballer would want to come and play here. When they tell you Liverpool want to sign you, I think like any player, you are going to be absolutely amazed and you don't think of anything else than going straight there. It's a team that nowadays, as I said before, any player would want to be a part of."

On 10 August 2014, Manquillo made his non-competitive debut in Liverpool's home tie against Borussia Dortmund. He produced a performance that was met with much praise from Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool won 4-0. His competitive debut came in Liverpool's opening match of the 2014-15 season, as he played the full 90 minutes in Liverpool's 2-1 win over Southampton. With regular right backs Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan injured, Manquillo was handed an early opportunity to make the right back spot his own.

On 16 September 2014, in Liverpool's first UEFA Champions League tie in five years with the visit of Bulgarian side Ludogorets to Anfield, Manquillo won a penalty in the dying moments of the match after being felled by the Ludogorets keeper. With the score at 1-1, Steven Gerrard converted the penalty to gift Liverpool the win.
