James William McConnell (born 13 September 2004) is an English footballer who plays as a midfielder for Liverpool. McConnell came through the academy after joining from Sunderland at the age of 15, making his senior debut in 2023.

Liverpool career

At 15, McConnell moved to Liverpool after coming up through the Sunderland academy. The youngster rose through the ranks at Liverpool and eventually became a regular for the U18s side.

In the summer of 2023, McConnell was included in the senior squad for pre-season, and made his unofficial debut for the club.

On 26 October 2023, McConnell made his senior debut, coming on as a substitute in a 5-1 win over Toulouse in the Europa League. Two weeks later, he came on as a late substitute to make his Premier League debut, as the Reds beat Brentford 3-0 at Anfield.

In January, McConnell’s progression was rewarded with a new long-term contract with the club. On 28th January 2024, he made his first start, playing almost 80 minutes and assisting Curtis Jones for the opening goal in a 5-2 win over Norwich in the FA Cup.
