Hugo Ekitiké (born 20 June 2002) is a French footballer who currently plays as a striker for Liverpool. Ekitike signed for an initial fee of £69,000,000, making him the club’s fourth most expensive signing of all time.

Liverpool career

Despite their success throughout the 2024-25 season, Liverpool struggled for goals from their strikers. Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez managed just 16 goals between them, and Luis Diaz was often used out of position as the main option up-front, even with both strikers fit.

Throughout the summer the Reds were linked with a variety of strikers, the main one tending to be Newcastle’s Alexander Isak. The fee for the Swede however, would have had to be one of the highest in history. Reports also linked Newcastle themselves with a move for Ekitike, who had had a breakthrough season at Eintracht Frankfurt.

As pre-season began, reports began to emerge that Ekitike favoured a move to Anfield, with Liverpool seemingly in pole-position to sign the striker.

On 23 July 2025, it was confirmed that Ekitike had joined Liverpool, for a reported fee of £69,000,000, potentially rising to £79,000,000 with add-ons. The Frenchman became the Reds’ seventh summer signing.

Ekitike made his Liverpool debut on 30 July 2025, a 3-1 friendly win over Yokohama FK. Two days later, it was confirmed that he would take the number 22 shirt for the 2025-26 season.

On 10 August 2025, Ekitike made his competitive debut, starting and playing 71 minutes as the Reds lost the Community Shield to Crystal Palace. The Frenchman immediately struck on his debut, firing in a fine effort from the edge of the area to give Liverpool an early lead.

Five days later, he made his first Premier League appearance, in a 4-2 win over Bournemouth. Ekitike was named player of the match, as he opened the scoring with a fine finish, before assisting Cody Gakpo for the second.
