Florian Richard Wirtz (born 3 May 2003) is a German international footballer who currently plays as a midfielder for Liverpool, signing from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025. At the time, Wirtz was Liverpool's record signing, joining for an initial fee of £100,000,000, but has since been usurped by Alexander Isak.
Liverpool career[]
After the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold was announced, question marks were raised of the creativity in the Liverpool side. Jeremie Frimpong quickly joined to replace the departing Englishman, but there were doubts over the club's creation in attack, with Mohamed Salah creating the bulk of chances, as well as finishing his own.
Wirtz had quickly become a sensation at Bayer Leverkusen, helping Xabi Alonso's men to an unbeaten league and cup double in 2023-24 while being named Bundesliga Player of the Season. Despite no further major silverware in the following campaign, Wirtz' performances didn't falter, and led to him being linked to a move away from the club.
Towards the end of the season, the vast majority of reports linked the German with a move to Bayern Munich or Manchester City, despite some rumoured interest from Liverpool. However, at the end of May it became clear that Wirtz had decided on a move to Anfield, with Bayern President, Herbert Hainer even announcing that the German was 'leaning towards Liverpool'.
At the start of June, reports emerged that the clubs were on the verge of completing a deal that would make Wirtz a club record signing.
On 20 June 2025, it was officially announced that Wirtz had agreed to join from Bayer Leverkusen, for an initial fee of £100,000,000 (with add-ons potentially taking the deal to £116,000,000). The German became the club's most expensive player of all time, breaking the record set by Virgil van Dijk in 2018.
Wirtz made his Liverpool debut on 20 July 2025, starting in a 5-0 friendly win over Stoke City. On 1 August 2025, it was confirmed that Wirtz would take the number 7 shirt, recently vacated by Luis Diaz.
On 10 August 2025, Wirtz made his competitive debut, starting and playing 84 minutes as the Reds were defeated by Crystal Palace in the Community Shield. Wirtz did however pick up his first assist for the club, setting up Hugo Ekitike's debut strike after a well worked move.
