Fabio Leandro Freitas Gouveia Carvalho (born 30 August 2002) is a Portuguese footballer who currently played for Liverpool from 2022 to 2024. The youngster made a promising start to his Liverpool career, scoring twice in his first six appearances after signing from Fulham. After this though, he found first-team opportunities hard to come by. His second season was taken up by two separate loan spells, and the Portuguese youngster was sold to Brentford in the summer of 2024.
Liverpool career[]
In the 2021-22 campaign, Carvalho had his major breakout at Fulham, becoming an important member of the squad and contributing with plenty of goals and assists in their push for promotion. In the January transfer window, rumours circulated about Liverpool interest, and in the final days it was heavily reported that a deal was close. On deadline day it became apparent that a deal had been agreed, but the club had run out of time to complete the deal. This meant Carvalho remained at Fulham for the second half of the season, winning the Championship and being named in the PFA Team of the Year.
On 23 May 2022, it was officially announced that Liverpool had agreed to bring Carvalho to the club upon the expiry of his Fulham contract in the summer. The clubs reportedly agreed a fee of around £5,000,000, meaning a tribunal would not be necessary to determine the fee, as it had for the Harvey Elliott signing three years earlier.
On 1 July 2022, Carvalho became a Liverpool player. Two days later, it was confirmed that he would be taking the number 28 shirt ahead of the 2022-23 season. Carvalho was a regular throughout pre-season, putting in some impressive and assured performances.
Carvalho made his Liverpool debut on 30 July 2022, coming on as a late substitute in the Community Shield victory over Manchester City.
On 27 August 2022, he scored his first goal for the Reds, firing in a fine volley after coming on at half-time in a 9-0 victory over Bournemouth. Four days later, he fired in a 98th minute winner over Newcastle, the club's latest ever winning goal in the Premier League.
For these performances, the youngster was rewarded with his first start for the club, but he was substituted at half-time in a 0-0 draw at Everton in the Merseyside Derby. Carvalho started three of the next five league games, and made some impressive cameos in the Champions League. These were not enough to keep his place however, and the youngster returned to the bench.
On 22 December 2022, Carvalho started in an EFL Cup tie away to Manchester City. He fired in the Reds' first goal in an eventual 3-2 defeat, with a smooth finish into the bottom corner. Despite this, he was taken off at half-time.
After this, Carvalho's game-time was heavily restricted, with manager Jurgen Klopp stating "He hasn't played too often because from my point of view we needed different skills when we started or when we changed during the games. That's pretty much all." He made a rare start on 17 January 2023, in a 1-0 win at Wolves in the FA Cup. This proved to be his only start for the rest of the campaign, and the youngster was restricted to just 8 further minutes of Premier League action through the rest of the campaign.
On 30 June 2023, it was confirmed that Carvalho was set to spend the 2023-24 season on loan at RB Leipzig in Germany, with a view to getting more first-team action. This did not transpire however, and Carvalho made just three starts before returning to Liverpool in January. On 10 January 2024, Carvalho was sent to Hull City for the remainder of the season.
After a much more successful loan spell at Hull, Carvalho returned to Liverpool for pre-season, with new manager Arne Slot at the helm. He featured throughout all games in the Reds' tour of the USA, and fired in well-taken goals against Arsenal and Manchester United.
Despite this, at the beginning of August, reports began to emerge that he was set to leave the club. On 12 August 2024, it was confirmed that Carvalho had signed for Brentford, for a total reported fee of £27,500,000.
Carvalho left Liverpool having made 21 appearances, and scoring 3 goals for the club.
