On 10 March 2000, Liverpool confirmed the signing of Heskey for a record fee of £11,000,000 from Leicester City. Heskey made his debut the next day, starting in a 1-1 draw with Sunderland. Heskey scored his first Liverpool goal in a 3-0 victory over Coventry on 1 April 2000. The striker ended the season with 3 goals in 12 appearances.
Heskey started off the 2000-01 season in fine form and finished the season as Liverpool's second top scorer with 22 goals in 56 games, whilst also featuring in Liverpool's three finals, helping the Reds on their way to the treble. The 2001-02 season was not as prolific as the previous season for Heskey as he netted only 9 league goals in 35 League appearances and only 14 goals in all, however he did net in the 2001 UEFA Super Cup.
In the 2002-03 season, Heskey netted just 9 goals in 52 appearances as he was pushed into a deeper midfield position, usually operating from the wing. Heskey scored 12 goals in his final season, and from five fewer games than in the previous campaign, however at the end of the season Birmingham City confirmed that they had signed Heskey for an initial fee of £3,500,000- which would have risen to £6,250,000 had Birmingham survived relegation in the 2004-05 season.
Overall, Heskey made 223 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 60 goals.
