Dominik Szoboszlai (born 25 October 2000) is a Hungarian international footballer who currently plays as a midfielder for Liverpool, signing from RB Leipzig in 2023. He is the most expensive midfield signing in the club’s history, joining for a reported fee of £60,000,000.

Liverpool career

Heading into the 2023-24 season, improvements in midfield were on the agenda at Liverpool after a disappointing campaign. James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all departed, and Arthur returned to Juventus at the end of his loan spell.

Liverpool had already taken early action, bringing in Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton, but it was clear that more needed to be done to bolster the club’s midfield options.

Towards the end of July, reports began to surface of interest in Szoboszlai, with both Liverpool and Newcastle showing apparent interest. It was also widely reported that the Hungarian had a release clause for around £60,000,000.

Szoboszlai had put in many impressive performances for RB Leipzig in the previous campaign, proving himself to be one of the top creators in the Bundesliga. He had also impressed against Liverpool in the Champions League years prior, and had made many positive comments about Anfield and Jurgen Klopp at the time.

On 30 June 2023, the day Szoboszlai’s release clause was set to expire, many reports began to emerge that Liverpool had activated the £60,000,000 clause, and that he would be undergoing a medical in the coming days.

On 2 July 2023, it was officially confirmed that Szoboszlai had signed for the club, joining on a five-year deal. The midfielder took the number 8 shirt, recently vacated by Naby Keita.
