Darwin Gabriel Núñez Ribeiro (born 24 June 1999) is a Uruguayan international footballer who currently plays as a forward for Liverpool. He is currently the club’s second most expensive signing of all time, joining from Benfica for a fee of £68,000,000.
Liverpool career[]
Despite the 2021-22 season being Liverpool’s highest scoring of all time, the departures of three major contributors- Sadio Mane, Takumi Minamino, and Divock Origi, meant that offensive reinforcements were necessary. Nunez had impressed in his appearances against Liverpool in the Champions League, scoring twice across the two legs, with another marginally ruled out for offside.
In June 2022, reports began to emerge of the club’s interest in Nunez, with a huge fee apparently required to prise him from Benfica.
On 12 June 2022, Benfica officially announced that a fee had been agreed for Liverpool to sign Nunez, pending the agreement of personal terms and a medical. An initial fee of £68,000,000 was set, with add-ons potentially taking it up to £85,000,000, which would make him the club’s record signing. A day later, Liverpool officially announced his signing, with Nunez set to join the club on 1 July. He took the number 27 shirt for the 2022-23 season, which had recently been vacated by Divock Origi.
Nunez made his friendly debut on 12 July, coming on as a substitute in a 4-0 defeat to Man Utd. A week later, the Uruguayan scored four in a 45 minute appearance against RB Leipzig.
