Daniel Ben "Danny" Murphy (born 18 March 1977) is an English footballer who played for Liverpool between 1997–2004. He signed from Crewe Alexandra for a fee of £1.5 million in July 1997. Murphy left Liverpool for Charlton Athletic in 10 August 2004 for £2.5 million, having made 249 appearances, scoring 44 goals.

Liverpool career

Touted as one of the most promising youngsters in the country, Murphy was being tracked by Liverpool and Newcastle during the 1996-97 season. He signed for Liverpool from Crewe Alexandra in July 1997 for £1.5 million. Manager Roy Evans said "Danny is a player we have watched for a long time, and Crewe have kept us informed of his progress. It´s nice to get his signature, because he has a lot of potential. He can play behind the strikers or in midfield, which gives us options." upon his signing.

He made his Liverpool debut on 9 August 1997 against Wimbledon coming on as a 67th minute substitute for Stig Inge Bjornebye. Murphy made 17 appearances on his first season for Liverpool. The following season he was used much less, making just four appearances in all competitions, only one of which was a start. He was loaned out to his former club Crewe Alexandra in the later half of the season, and helped them fight off relegation. When Gerard Houllier alerted other clubs to Murphy's availability, it looked like his Liverpool career was all but over.

Murphy stayed on at Liverpool however and made himself a regular in the side in the 1999-2000 season. He scored his first goal for the Reds on 14 September 1999 against Hull City in the League Cup second round first leg match. His first league goal came against Derby County on 6 November 1999 where he scored a 65th minute deflected goal. He made 27 appearances overall this season, scoring six goals.

Murphy's Liverpool career came to an end on 10 August 2004 when he joined Charlton Athletic for £2.5 million. In his seven seasons at Liverpool Murphy ammased 249 appearances in all competitions, scoring 44 goals.
