Liverpool career

After spending seven years in Sevilla's academy, Ayala signed for Liverpool in September 2007 and played in the youth team in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. Upon joining Ayala said "I didn't hesitate when I found out Liverpool were interested, I didn't know much about the city but I knew all about the club and its successes."

Ayala broke through into the first team early in the 2009-10 season, making his debut against Tottenham on 16 August 2009, replacing Martin Skrtel as a 75th minute substitute. His first start for Liverpool came shortly after on 19 August 2009 in a 4-0 win over Stoke.

In order to gain regular first team experience, Ayala was loaned out to Championship side Hull on 11 September 2010. This loan move was followed by another, this time to Derby, on 11 February 2011. Ayala impresses in both loan spells and played regularly, leading to many tipping him for future greatness.

In August 2011, Hull City, Swansea City and Norwich City all had bids, reported to be in the region of £800,000 accepted by Liverpool for Ayala's signature. On 13 August, Ayala agreed terms with Norwich City and sealed the move on 16 August.
