Cody Mathes Gakpo (born 7 May 1999) is a Dutch international footballer who plays as a forward for Liverpool, having signed from PSV Eindhoven in 2023.

Liverpool career

After the departure of Sadio Mane and with Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz both ruled out with long-term injuries, Liverpool were suffering something of a crisis at the left of their attack at the back end of 2022. Darwin Nunez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Curtis Jones and Fabio Carvalho all deputised, but none were naturals in the position.

After an impressive few seasons with PSV, and a starring role with Netherlands at the World Cup, Gakpo was in high demand for the January transfer windows, with many reports claiming that a move to Manchester United was inevitable. On 26 December 2022 however, reliable club journalists began saying that a move to Liverpool had been agreed, subject to personal terms. Later that evening, PSV announced that a fee had been agreed for the provisional transfer.

On 28 December 2022, it was announced that Gakpo would officially sign for Liverpool on 1 January, for a reported initial fee of £37,000,000, potentially rising to £44,000,000. It was confirmed that he would take the number 18 shirt, last worn by Takumi Minamino.
