Arthur Henrique Santos Ramos de Oliveira Melo (born 12 August 1996) is a Brazilian international footballer who played as a midfielder for Liverpool in the 2022-23 season, on loan from Juventus. The Brazilian managed just one appearance for the club in a season ruined by injury.
Liverpool career[]
During the summer of 2022, it was believed by a significant section of the Liverpool support that reinforcements were necessary in midfield. Thiago, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all were judged to be prone to injury, while Jordan Henderson and James Milner were both in the twilight of their careers. Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott were both good options despite their youth, and the new signing of Fabio Carvalho bolstered the numbers.
Lots of reports had linked Liverpool to Aurélien Tchouaméni, who had signed for Real Madrid in the same window, and Jurgen Klopp later indirectly referenced the club's failure to acquire him later in the window. Despite missing out on this target however, Klopp claimed he was happy with the club's midfield options.
After a rocky start to the season however, with the club failing to win in their first three Premier League games, Klopp claimed 'I was wrong', and declared his intention to bring another midfielder to the club before the end of the window.
On 1 September 2022, it was confirmed that Liverpool had agreed a deal to bring Arthur to the club, on loan from Juventus. The Brazilian international had fallen out of favour in Italy after his move from Barcelona, and was keen to find more game-time and play in a more familiar style at Liverpool. The deal also included an option to permanently sign the Brazilian for a fee of £37,500,000 in the following summer. It was confirmed that Arthur would wear the number 29 shirt for the 2022-23 season.
On 7 September 2022, Arthur made his Liverpool debut, coming on as a late substitute in a 4-1 defeat away to Napoli in the Champions League. This cameo however, would prove to be his only appearance for the club. A few weeks later, he picked up an injury that ruled him out until March. After his return, he made a few appearances on the substitutes bench, but failed to make another appearance for the club.
At the end of the season, Arthur returned to Juventus, having made just a single appearance throughout the campaign.
