Arend Martijn “Arne” Slot (born 17 September 1978) is a Dutch football manager who became the head coach of Liverpool F.C. in 2024. Following on from Jurgen Klopp, the Dutchman proved to be an immediate success at Anfield. In his first season in charge, Slot led the Reds to their 20th league title.

Liverpool career[]

In January 2024 after almost nine years in charge of Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp announced that he was to leave the club after the 2023-24 season. After the shock dissipated, names of potential replacements began to emerge. The most notable was Xabi Alonso, the former player who was mightily impressing at Bayer Leverkusen. Also closely linked were Ruben Amorim of Sporting CP, and Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton.

Towards the end of the season a clearer picture began to emerge. Alonso confirmed he was to stay in Germany for at least another season, and Amorim began to be linked with a move to West Ham before ultimately declaring he would stay with Sporting. The new media favourite quickly became Arne Slot.

Slot had impressed in his two senior managerial roles in the Netherlands. First he took over at AZ Alkmaar in 2019, and immediately took them to challenging for the league title. Before the league was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the club was 2nd in the league, behind Ajax on goal difference. In 2021 he took over at Feyenoord. His first season saw them reach their first European final in 20 years, narrowly losing to Jose Mourinho’s Roma side in the Conference League. He followed this up with the league title in his second year, followed by the Dutch Cup in his final season at the club.

On 19 May 2024, Jurgen Klopp addressed the crowd after his final game in charge of the club, and chanted “Arne Slot” to the Kop to show his support for the man believed to be his replacement.

A day later, it was announced that Slot would become the club’s head coach on 1 June 2024, signing on a three-year-deal.
