Aly Cissokho (born 15 September 1987) is a French footballer who played as a left back for Liverpool in the 2013-14 season, on loan from Valencia.

Liverpool career[]

In the summer of 2013, it was reported that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was keen to recruit a left back to compete with the inconsistent Jose Enrique. Interest in Valencia's Cissokho, who had fallen out of favour at the Mestalla, was reported midway through the transfer window, however it was only after a deal for Granada's Guilherme Siqueira fell through that Liverpool moved to secure Cissokho. On 20 August 2013, Liverpool confirmed they had agreed a season-long loan deal for Cissokho, which is believed to have cost €1,000,000. It was also widely reported that the deal includes an option to buy for a fee of €5,000,000. He was given squad number 20, last worn by Jay Spearing.

Cissokho made his Liverpool debut just days later, entering as a second half substitute as the Reds recorded a 1-0 away victory against Aston Villa. On 27 August 2013, Cissokho made his first start for the club, but was taken off with an ankle injury 10 minutes into a 4-2 League Cup win over Notts County. The injury kept Cissokho sidelined for six weeks. He made his comeback on 7 October 2013, playing the duration of the Liverpool U21s' 5-0 victory over Tottenham. On 19 October 2013, Cissokho made his first league start for Liverpool, playing the full 90 minutes in a 2-2 draw with Newcastle.

After a series of poor performances, Cissokho lost his place in the team to youngster Jon Flanagan for the Merseyside Derby against Everton on 23 November 2013. An injury to Flanagan brought Cissokho back into the team for the Boxing Day clash away to Manchester City, in which he performed admirably in a 2-1 defeat. On 12 January 2014, Cissokho played a major part in Liverpool's first goal in a 5-3 win at Stoke, firing an optimistic shot from outside the box, which deflected off Stoke centre back Ryan Shawcross into the net.

After a protracted period of time on the sidelines with Flanagan and Glen Johnson preferred in the full back positions, Cissokho made what appeared to be his final appearance in a Liverpool shirt on 11 May 2014- the last day of the Premier League season. He turned in a good performance as Liverpool overcame a 1-0 deficit to beat Newcastle 2-1 and claim second place in the Premier League.
