Alexander Isak (born 19 September 1999) is a Swedish international footballer who currently plays as a striker for Liverpool. Joining from Newcastle, Isak is Liverpool’s record signing, joining for a British transfer record fee of £125,000,000.
Liverpool career[]
The summer of 2025 was one of massive change for Liverpool. The tragic passing of Diogo Jota, as well as the departures of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez saw the club in dire need of reinforcements in attack.
In the previous season, Isak had proven his pedigree as a world-class striker, managing 23 Premier League goals, and scoring the winner in the EFL Cup final, as Newcastle beat Liverpool to end their 70 year trophy drought.
Rumours of Liverpool’s interest in Isak first ramped up in July, with both clubs also chasing Hugo Ekitike, who eventually joined the Reds. Newcastle were reported to have quoted a £150,000,000 fee if Isak was to leave the club that summer. Liverpool had allegedly made a £110,000,000 offer.
After this, Isak did not join Newcastle on their pre-season tour, and it became evident that the Swede was refusing to either train or play for the club.
On 19 August 2025, ahead of the PFA Awards, Isak did not attend and released a statement accusing Newcastle of broken promises, telling the club "change is in the best interests of everyone". Newcastle in turn released a statement denying this and stating they ‘do not see the conditions being met’ for a transfer.
The saga proved to be the backdrop for a classic game between the two sides on 26 August, with the Reds overcoming a hostile atmosphere to beat Newcastle 3-2 at St. James Park.
On 1 September 2025, reports began to emerge that the two clubs had finally agreed a deal for Isak to join Liverpool ahead of the transfer deadline. Later that day, the move was finally confirmed, with the Swede signing for a reported British Transfer Record of £125,000,000.
Isak signed a six-year deal, and took the number 9 shirt, recently vacated by Darwin Nunez.
On 17 September 2025, Isak made his Liverpool debut, starting and playing 58 minutes in a Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid. Manager, Arne Slot stressed the importance of managing the striker's minutes, with Isak not having had a proper pre-season. Three days later, he came on as a substitute in a 2-1 win in the Merseyside Derby for his Premier League debut.
On 23 September 2025, Isak scored his first goal for the club, calmly finishing a square Federico Chiesa ball to open the scoring in a 2-1 win over Southampton in the EFL Cup.
