After Danny Ward and Adam Bogdan departed the club on loan, Liverpool were in need of a third choice goalkeeper. Former Arsenal and Juventus keeper Manninger had been released after a four year spell at Augsburg, and provided a bout of experience which Jurgen Klopp lacked in his goalkeepers.
For the first part of pre-season, Manninger was simply training with the club in order to keep himself fit should any clubs be interested, but on 22 July 2016, it was confirmed that the Austrian had signed a short-term contract with the club. He was given the number 13 shirt for the 2016-17 season, the first player to wear it since Anthony Le Tallec back in 2005.
On 2 August 2016, Manninger made his Liverpool debut, starting in a 2-1 friendly defeat to Roma. The Austrian put in a good performance, making one great save in his first 45 minutes at the club.
At the end of the 2016-17 season, Manninger announced his retirement from football, having failed to make an appearance for Liverpool.
