The 2012-13 Academy Under 18s season marked another change in management for the Under 18s as Mike Marsh made the move to Melwood to work with Brendan Rodgers as a first team coach. Academy manager Steve Cooper instead took the reins for the season.
The youth League systems underwent a substantial revamp for this season, analagous to the changes implemented for the 2012-13 Reserves season (see this page for a detailed explanation of the new Premier Academy League competitions). Liverpool's League results were somewhat disappointing; despite some high-scoring matches and impressive individual displays, Liverpool were only able to finish fourth in the First Group Stage. As such, they failed to qualify for the Elite Group Stage in the second half of the season, but instead entered into the Qualification Group. Again results were sub-par, and the team finished fifth, thus missing out on a place in the Final Round. Liverpool faired better in the FA Youth Cup- some dominant displays propelled them to the semi-finals, however here they lost 4-1 on aggregate against Chelsea.
Although an underwhelming campaign, there were a number of notable individual performances during the season. Still not yet an official Academy scholar, young forward Jerome Sinclair top-scored with 11 goals in 22 games and even went on to make his debut with the Liverpool senior side. Jack Dunn was a star performer in Liverpool's FA Youth Cup run, however his season was injury-hit. Young midfield general Jordan Rossiter also impressed after making an early step-up from the U16s, and by the season's end, had established himself fully in the U18s side, even taking the captain's armband for some matches.
The season was punctuated by a trip to Qatar in early 2013 to take part in the Al Kass Cup along with 11 other U18 sides from around the world. Despite a good early start to the tournament, the team began to struggle and eventually finished in 8th place.
